MR0103-2003

Title

“Petroleum and Natural Gas Industries--Materials for use in Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S)-containing Environments in Oil and Gas Production”

“Materials Resistant to Sulfide Stress Cracking in Corrosive Petroleum Refining Environments”

Application

Sour oilfield environments/oil and gas production (upstream)

Refinery applications/refining and gas processing (downstream)

Definition of Sour Service

Applies when,

partial pressure of H2S in wet gas phase > 0.05 psia (0.0003 MPa)

and system pressure > 65 psia (0.45 Mpa).

Applies when,

dissolved H2S in free water is > 50 ppmw

or free water pH < 4 and some dissolved H2S

or free water pH > 7.6 and hydrogen cyanide (HCN) > 20 ppmw and some dissolved H2S

or partial pressure of H2S in wet gas phase > 0.05 psia (0.0003 MPa)

Concerns

Considers sulfide stress cracking (SSC) and chloride stress corrosion cracking (SCC)

Considers sulfide stress cracking (SSC), free water pH, and HCN
