Case Study: Pulse Burst Radar Reduces Wet Well Maintenance Costs at Water Quality Plant

The Challenge
Instrumentation plays an important role in reducing operating expenses for many municipal utilities and facilities, including water and wastewater treatment plants. To decrease maintenance costs at 11 remote pumping stations, the engineering staff of a treatment plant in upstate New York realized that they had to replace float-based level controls that were getting tangled up in their wet well collection basins. Every time this issue occurred, the plant incurred four hours of overtime costs.
The Solution
Microwave-based radar is a superior measurement technology that works well in a wide range of process conditions. That’s why the plant turned to the Magnetrol®Model R82 pulse burst radar transmitter to provide non-contact measurement in this challenging environment. This solution gave engineers the ability to aim the radar signal at the “open” part of the wet well – and to dial in the radar signal.
The Results
The Model R82 pulse burst radar transmitter performed without incident in the wet well, which eliminated the maintenance costs associated with using float-based level controls. The results were so impressive that the engineering staff planned to implement R82 units in all of the plant’s wet wells – and in many of the plant’s tank level measurement applications.
